The presence of water is infused in the planet's ecology and topography. It exists as rivers, as ancient groundwater, as polar ice, as the oceans, in the atmosphere, in living organisms, in commodities, in fact everywhere, all interconnected in an often invisible global cycle. As mythology, legend and history it has shaped culture, political boundaries and social relationships. Yet is is today in many parts of the world, taken for granted, abused, polluted, exploited, and is the subject of intense disputes. Like an elephant in the room, it can never be fully understood.
The world of water and water conservation extends itself across disciplines – engaging specialists from economists to conservationists, from scientists to filmmakers and artists - in the arduous task of studying, recording and communicating the significance of water and the need to responsibly manage it. The role of water is not always visible in today’s complex market economy and urban life, but water’s footprints are an integral part of every aspect of daily lives. How do these thinkers and professionals tread this sensitive yet significant subject?
The panellists are invited to present selected works and discuss their modes of engagement with the subject of Water. How do they make visible the human impact on the larger sphere of life, where every living being depends on the same resource? How do we engrain the need for responsible use of this life sustaining element that makes our planet unique in this universe? How do we treat water not as a resource but as a prime part of the planet's ecology?
