DRAWING CLUB | FAIR DRAWINGS

Venue: India Art Fair, NSIC Grounds, Okhla, New Delhi
Fee: No registration fees, but participants will need to buy their own entry pass to the fair
The session will be a visit to the India Art Fair to look and identify different kinds of drawings at the fair. Participants will be invited to share their observations in the form of comic strips in this exercise where they will be on the lookout for different kinds of drawings.
FICA Drawing Club is an open group, with drawing enthusiasts who come together regularly to meet, draw and share their works. Proposed as an organic series of workshops and engagements, it wishes to bring an inquiry on drawing to the fore. The Drawing Club is an initiative by artist Gagan Singh in collaboration with FICA.
The first workshop was conducted on 11th May 2016 at Vadehra Art Gallery, D-53 Defence Colony. The workshop dealt with 'Mark Making' as a framework to think about the possibilities of drawing. The second workshop 'Drawing from Life' was conducted on 25th June 2016 and was a session in which the participants took a metro ride together and sketched the people, the journey and the surroundings they were in.The third session, 'Animating Thoughts' on 9th September at FICA Reading Room, invited participants to view exciting films and discuss and learn from the practices of artists like William Kentridge, David Shrigley, Paul Bill Barritt, Nalani Malani among others. 'Still 3D', a session on 21 December 2016, explored the Anubhav Gallery of the National Museum focusing specially on the experience of an artwork through the experience of touch. Participants were encouraged to draw from their observations in the absence of visual sensory information. The Chandni Chowk sketching walk 'Point A to B' happened on 6th January 2017 at Nayi Sadak in Chawri Bazaar and culminated into a discussion in the Red Fort lawns. The session explored the aspects of perception, observation and the immediacy of the site. We look forward to your registrations for the final session which will be a exploration into the exhibited works at the art fair!
Gagan Singh studied fine art in the UK and has exhibited in various group shows including the Sarai Reader 09 at the Devi Art Foundation, Delhi, 2012 – 2013. The content of the work falls into two broad categories, the autobiographical and the erotic. In both cases, humor acts as a point of access through which other issues, often more serious, are explored by the artist. He is the recipient of Indian Foundation for the Art's Extended Arts Practice Grant and had a solo exhibition in Chatterjee and Lal Gallery, Mumbai in 2014. The key ideas to his art practice are a fascination about drawing.
