August 9, 2007

FICA, in collaboration with Bangalore-based Jackfruit Research and Design, organised an evening focused on photography. As a part of the New Delhi launch of Bombay Jadoo (Published by Steidl, Germany 2007), by the Washington DC-based photographer Betsy Karel, a panel discussion focused around topics that were addressed in the book itself -- photography as a documentary medium, public and

private spaces, gender in space, and urban growth.

The panel consisted of Betsy Karel, Sabeena Gadihoke and Ram Rahman. Sabeena Gadihoke is a documentary film maker and independent cameraperson. Sabeena works on the history of photography in India and her book, "Camera Chronicles" on India's first woman photojournalist Homai Vyarawalla was published by Mapin and Parzor last year. She teaches Video and Television Production at the AJK Mass Communication Research Centre, Jamia University in New Delhi. Ram Rahman is a photographer, designer and activist. He has divided his time between New York and Delhi for the past 25 years. He is also a founding

member of SAHMAT, a leader in the resistance to communal and sectarian forces in India through its public cultural action.

By bringing together artists, photographers, urban studies scholars and other interested audience, the event focused on addressing photography from a wide perspective. The slide presentations by Betsy and Ram, and Sabeena’s critically positioned presentation opened the floor to discussion on the history and styles of photography in India and the strong social reactions faced by photography. There was also much discussion around Bombay Jadoo -- the identity of the photographer, Betsy Karel, and that of the subject, the city of Mumbai.
