Writing Art
Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi
January 7-13, 2007

The practice and theorization of art are related to the reception and the circulation of art. Writing makes the “artness” of art, contributing to its aura and value. Art is visual, writing about art is textual. Art criticism and history mediate art through text for a wider audience. Interpretations and opinions gain further value in published works. The workshop took this relationship between visual
and written texts as its impetus.
FICA, commissioned Art, Resources
& Teaching, Bangalore (www.artscape

india.org ) to design and conduct the workshop. Many scholars and writers contributed their expertise to the workshop, including Anita Dube, Annapurna Garimella, Anupam Poddar, Gayatri Sinha, Geeta Kapur, Johnny M L, Kavita Singh, and Rustom Bharucha.

The workshop addressed the following themes:
History of art writing and the relation-ship between criticism and history
Writing about the Indian art market
Curatorial practices and writing
Catalogue writing – ethics and language
Reviews
Writing in art criticism and art history
Artists’ biographies

FICA funded young professionals and graduate students to travel to Delhi and participate in the workshop.
